In the Beginning...

It was a great first day of preparing the Ward Garden. We even had a better turn out then expected. There was never an official count but probably over 20 Elders, High Priests and even Relief Society Sisters showed up. In fact the turn out was so good, they postponed the plans of teaching the Irrigation Class, and decided to clear the weeds from the entire plot of land. This way it will lower the number of weed infestations in the garden during the growing season.

It was a lot of hard, back-aching, manual labor. But it was definitely a great learning experience of what it would be like to "clear the land" and prepare for a garden. It gave you a great sense of appreciation for what our ancestors needed to accomplish to sustain themselves. This is a great ward project, and will certainly benefit us in preparing to sustain for ourselves.

For those that were unable to come out and join us in the fun, we took a few pictures to give you an idea of what it looked like and what was accomplished.

*HINT* - For those of you reading blogs for the first time, or still a rookie...you can click on the pictures to open them up bigger.

Here is the land when we started at 8:30 in the morning. It had been tilled up and we started to rake all the weeds out.

Then we got closer to the corners of the land, where the tractor couldn't reach to get the really big weeds.

This was right before we finished! Look at that fresh tilled ground ready to be watered and planted.

Here is the view from the front of the land. If you are clicking on the pictures, you can see more detail of how great it looks after removing all the weeds.
